Name:   Astatotilapia calliptera "Chisumulu"  (Greenwood, 1973)

Synonym:    Haplochromis calliptera

Common name:

Location:    In Lake Malawi and the rivers around Chisumulu, Lake Malawi

Adult size:    males: 5.5 inches (14 cm),   Females: 4 inches (10 cm)

Diet:    detritus and phytoplankton

Personal notes:  Astatotilapia calliptera is actually a Malawi cichlid, often mis-identified as a Lake Victoria cichlid due to the genus name and it's physical appearance  The blue lips and the line through the eye are definitely common Victorian cichlid traits.  I purchased 12 of these from WetSpot in 2013.  Astatotilapia calliptera is found in shallow water with a sand bottom and Vallisneria plants.

The dominant male is shown above.  He is about a year old and is 4 inches (10 cm) long

The female is shown above. This picture was taken when she was very young and only around 1.5 inches (4 cm) long.

Based upon the article in the Cichlid News (Oct 2007) it appears that I have the calliptera from around Chisumulu.
