Personal notes:  I was given two groups of Lipochromis melanopterus by a friend around September 2016.  These 17 cichlids are now sharing a single species 75 gallon aquarium.  They've probably bred a few times and I didn't notice the holding female hiding under the rocks.  Twice I have caught a holding female and moved her to a smaller brreding tank only to have her swallow her eggs the next day.

Above is my dominant male Lipochromis melanopterus at around one year old and 4 inches (10 cm) total length

Above is one of the female Lipochromis melanopterus at around one year old and 3 inches (7 cm) total length

Some of the female Lipochromis melanopterus are blotched.
