Valid name:    Pundamilia nyererei "Mwanza Gulf" (Witte-Maas & Witte, 1985)

Synonym:    NA

Common name:    Red Mwanza (An illegitimate commercial name)

Location:    Lake Victoria (Mwanza Gulf, Tanzania)

Adult male size:    4 1/2 inches (12 cm)

Diet:    insectivore/omnivore

Personal notes:  Old World Exotics (aka Laif DeMason) imported some wild caught Victorian cichlids in 2007.  I purchased nine of these that were advertised as F1 stock from in August of 2008.  I have 2M:6F in a single species 55 gallon tank.  The third male had to be removed since there wasn't adequate territory for the third male.  They bred for me several times' however they did not breed true.  The males varied quite a bit from red to orange and the amount of blue in the dorsal fins varied quite a bit as well.

The exact location was unknown so they were gizen the somewhat generic location of Mwanza Gulf.  In any case, the dominant male was certainly the most stunning nyererei I've ever kept.

Above Right is the subdominant male.  He is still showing good color but the blue at the mouth is more grey, the stripes are less distinct, the pelvic fins are not as dark, and the fins are a bit frayed from nipping.

Females above.  The first and last picture above show the female holding eggs/fry.

Fry at about 3/4 inch (1.75 cm) above.  Note the egg spot and the clear anal fin of the likely male in the middle.  Note the yellowish anal fin of the likely female above right.
