A  male African dwarf cichlid from Lake Upemba and Lake Ankoro in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire).  The nicholsi are lake dwelling insectivores that prefer my alkaline water conditions.  They grow to only about 3 1/2 inches (9 cm).  The male is just developing a little red in the fins.  I purchased a pair of these cichlids at the Columbus club auction in the fall of 2002 and then two more pairs at the Ohio Cichlid Extravaganza.  They all came from http://www.alloddballaquatics.com

As you can see below the females are quite drab in comparison to the males.
